While the MC / emcee is often associated with the traditional aspects of hip-hop, which connects with the other three main elements of hip-hop culture: DJing, graffiti and breakdancing meanwhile, the rapper is often seen as more in tune with the trends and demands of mainstream popular culture. The reason for the separation between the rapper and the MCĪs time passed, a differentiation began to emerge by some in hip-hop culture between an “MC” or “emcee” and a “rapper”. Over time, numerous artists such as MC Shan, MC Lyte, MC Hammer, and Young MC included this title in their stage names. When the groundbreaking hit song “Rapper’s Delight” was released in 1979, the focus of hip-hop music and culture shifted directly to the vocalist or MC. As MCs were given more freedom on the microphone in front of the audience, MCs began to do more creative work with the opportunity to perform. The variety of slang used in hip-hop language gave MC new meanings such as “Microphone Controller”, “Move the Crowd”, “Mic Checker”. Then, as hip-hop culture developed, so did the MC’s duties and prestige. In most cases the MC needed the DJ’s permission to get into the microphone. If any rhyme was to be done by the MC, it was used to get the audience excited about how great the DJ was. During this period, MCs were on stage only to get the crowd excited about the DJ and announcing upcoming shows. The most popular DJs gained huge followings and drew the biggest crowds at their events.
